Might and passion at the piano
The young genius of the piano, Juan Pérez Floristán, winner of the First Prize and Gold Medal Audience Award at the XVIII “Paloma O’Shea” Santander International Piano Competition (2015), opened the fourth season of the Formentor Sunset Classics classical music festival on Saturday, 16 July, with a moving piano recital that made an impact on everyone there.
Pérez Floristán, happy and excited to be taking the stage at Formentor, which has already hosted concerts and recitals given by the greatest geniuses of classical music, such as the Chinese pianist Lang Lang, said: “In a natural setting such as Barceló Formentor, playing in the open air facing the sea is magnificent, the ultimate experience. When you bring Hilary Hahn, Ainhoa Arteta and the Cuarteto Quiroga, together in the same programme, the result is an explosion of talent, an inspiration for any artist. What more could you ask for?”.
Music flows through his veins, for his own mother, María Floristán, was his mentor for more than ten years. His father, the conductor Juan Luis Pérez, has also contributed his own grain of splendour to this young man, who took the Majorcan stage to dazzle the audience at the first concert of the season, in which he participated thanks to the partnership agreement between the Fundación Albéniz and the Barceló Hotel Group that gives support to talented young musicians.
Before his intimate recital, those attending were able to enjoy a Master Class on the programme given by the Festival's Artistic Director, Felipe Aguirre, which prepared the audience to appreciate the pieces played by the artists with greater intensity.
“Beethoven moves me to discover things. He is a revolutionary, so brilliant and groundbreaking that you always find in his creations things that continue to surprise you." Regarding the Liszt Sonata, which the audience was profoundly moved to hear played with such passion, Pérez Floristán confessed, "it is an odyssey, 30 minutes followed by fireworks, a vital experience. One is exhausted by the end, empty but comforted."
This year's big innovation is the major online dimension the Festival has gained, both through its website www.formentorsunsetclassics.com, and its social media profiles on Facebook, and Instagram, thanks to which fans of the hotel can now enjoy the Festival's latest news as well as exclusive new content that includes streamed extracts from the concerts for anyone wishing to enjoy the Mediterranean's most enchanting moments.
